Well, where do I start on my journey? Well the Von Trapp family would suggest “… at the very beginning, a very good place to start …”, but for your sake and my sanity we will skip a few pages. As a young child I found my love of singing in my Anglican church choir, it was great as I was a really shy kid who u couldn’t get boo out of but when I sang I was another person, much more content within my own skin. I grew up and didn’t sing formally for many years throughout my late teens and early adulthood but always sang at every opportunity to express my joy of life! You know … in the shower, in the car driving to work, whenever I could really. I always wanted to sing in a group but my shyness that’s still sat dormant inside me would prevent me from having the confidence to follow through; thankfully I have managed to socialise my shyness and take control.
Well as I am getting older I decided that I needed to step outside my comfort zone so I started googling choirs. I found a few but then I found a community gay choir. This choir really excited me as I came out later in life and I felt like I missed out on being involved in our community growing up. It seemed perfect for me as it provided the connection to our community and being able to singing with likeminded peers, with an added opportunity to promote equality for our community. I decided to email the choir and they responded really quickly which helped to ease my mind. A date was set for the first practice and I still remember how it went. I remember sitting in my car for 30 mins outside the choir address trying to build up the confidence to go inside. I just about drove away so many times, however I decided I must go in at least once … so I did and from the very beginning everyone was amazing and supportive. Time has gone on now and I live for choir lessons every week as well as seeing our amazing and diverse community coming together as one.
